Xwémalhkwu Hero Stories is based on recordings of Homalco Elders from the early
90’s that were then produced into a mini podcast series by 100.7 FM the Raven. The
three stories illustrated in the graphic novel depict historic moments of Coast Salish
history. Indigenous graphic artists who are featured include: Alina Pete, Valen
Onstine and Gord Hill.
This project was managed by national award-winning Podcaster and CHEK Journalist
Tchadas Leo from the HFN along with support from Elizabeth “Biz” Nijdam, a UBC
Assistant Professor and Director of the UBC Comics Studies Cluster, and Education
without Borders co-founders, Cecil and Ruth Hershler.
The project would not be possible without the guidance and collaboration of HFN
Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
