Every time Clem cries, a fairy is born. But, who really wants a dozen pesky little strangers in their face during such vulnerable moments? Clem certainly doesn't. She treats the dandelion fairies with hostility and attempts to suppress them along with her tears. But, the more that she mistreats them, the worse things get. It's not until Clem exercises some tenderness that the fairies calm down and show her care.
Dandelion Tears is a story about allowing yourself to live through your emotions rather than lashing out against them. As an expression of her feelings, both good and bad, the fairies must be embraced in order for Clem to feel better as the story progresses. In the end, she's still crying and that's okay.
