The Conductor

Friday, May 11, 2012

If you haven’t checked out this amazing, wordless picture book yet, now is the time ladies and gentlemen! “The Conductor” by Laetitia Devernay is not only simply beautiful to look at as an object, but it also tells a very magical and imaginative story.
Leafs become birds, conducted into a glorious, whirling, dance by ‘the conductor’ perched up high on one of the participating trees. There is something especially magical about successful wordless picture books, that when you open them up they seem to have a kind of song or music that emanates from them. Perhaps it’s the rhythm of the book that all of a sudden becomes so much more pronounced because of the lack of text based narrative. Some wordless picture books I’ve read that had this quality were “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan and “Anno’s Journey” by Anno. “The Conductor” also has it, and it seems obvious in a way, since it is after all a story named after someone who conducts music.

Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy!

Thursday, April 05, 2012

ERNIE BUSHMILLER'S NANCY!

For many years, Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy, with its odd-looking, squat heroine, nearly abstract art, and often super-corny gags, was perceived as the stodgiest, squarest comic strip in the world. Popular with newspaper read- ers, true — but definitely not a strip embraced by comic-strip connoisseurs, like Krazy Kat, Dick Tracy or Terry and the Pirates.

But then those connoisseurs took a closer look, and began to realize that Bushmiller’s art approached its own kind of cartoon perfection, and those corny gags often achieved a striking zen quality. In its own way, it turned out Nancy was in fact the most iconic comic strip of all. (The American Heritage Dictionary actually uses a Nancy strip to illustrate its entry on “comic strip.”)

This first volume will collect every daily strip from 1943 to 1945. (Fantagraphics will eventually release Nancy’s first five years, 1938-1942, but given the scarcity of archival material for these years we are giving ourselves some extra time to collate it all.)

This first Nancy volume will feature an introduction by another stellar Bushmiller fan, Daniel Clowes (from whose collection most of the strips in this volume were scanned), a biography of the artist, and much more.

D.I.Y. MAGIC by Anthony Alvarado
40 b&w illustrations, cover design by Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy
First edition letterpress silver foil cover limited to 1000 copies, 176 pages, 5″ x 8″,
$14.00

Lucky’s just received an interesting literary spectacle in the form of a small book of ‘new wave’ magic.
Scattered throughout the many chapters are illuminating illustrations and artworks from a handfull of talented underground and established comic book artists.
Luke Ramsey, Jason McClean, Faryl Dalrymple, Ines Estrada and Ron Rege Jr. and just a few of the talents featured within the text.

From what i get from the book,Alvarado speaks of magic in a form thats really just practical living, poetry for life in the guise of supernatural spells.
As strange as this book seems on the outside, its also accessible to casual readers as well as hardcore fans of the occult.
Another one of a kind publication from our American friends Floating World Comics in Portland Oregon.
-Ben Jacques, vancouver artist and amateur dark mage.

heres a couple more write ups..
“Few books are as immediately useful as this delightful, inspirational tips ‘n’ tricks tome. I’m having a backyard betel nut party in five minutes and everyone’s invited!” -Jay Babcock, editor of Arthur Magazine

“Anthony Alvarado has concocted a cookbook for vivid living: poetry that’s lived rather than written. His “spells” are actually practical suggestions by which the reader may coax the extraordinary from the everyday—and from themselves.” – Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy, author of The Affected Provincial’s Companion
